The NOOK Base · A personal retreat
A garden man cave or she shed, warm all year
Every room went to work, the kids or the family. Here is one that's finally yours — a warm, powered 9.75 m² retreat.
A garden retreat that is yours alone, warm all year round.
A room of one's own
Why it earns its place
Every room went to work or the kids. This one is yours.
The counterweight to all the productive rooms — this one is just for you.
A room of one's own
A warm, characterful room at the end of the garden — finally, just yours
The house gave every room to work, the family or storage, and left nothing that is only yours. The hobby, the gear, the quiet hour have nowhere to live. A personal retreat at the end of the garden is a warm, finished room with your name on it — a door to close and an hour that belongs to no one else.
Hers, his, yours
One Base, any retreat
A room of one's own — however you'd fill it. Scroll through three ways to make it yours.
01 · The reading room
The reading room
An armchair, a lamp and a wall of shelves — the quiet, warm room for reading and an hour to yourself.
02 · The record room
The record room
A turntable, a wall of vinyl and a small drinks cabinet — a warm, low-lit room for the record and the evening after.
03 · The maker's room
The maker's room
A workbench, tools on a wall rail and good light — the warm, powered room for the model, the restoration or a project mid-build.
Inside and out, a proper room
Inside · warm & powered
A proper finished interior, with dimmable warm LED and a full electrical install for the TV, the console, the tools or a fridge — a room to spend time in, not a store.
Outside · charcoal & finished
Charcoal heat-treated timber, a considered building with double safety-tempered glazing — a world away from a flat-pack shed at the end of the garden.
The qualifier, made concrete
A retreat, not a shed or a cold garage
The difference between a proper room and somewhere to keep things, criterion by criterion.
| Criteria | A NOOK Base retreat | A timber garden shed | The garage corner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm year-round? | Insulated, Energy A | Cold and damp | Cold, shared |
| Finished? | A proper interior | Bare timber | Unfinished |
| Powered? | Full electrical install | An extension lead | Shared circuit |
| Secure? | Lockable, glazed | Basic latch | Open to the house |
| Yours? | Entirely your own room | Storage first | The car's, really |

Reversible, not permanent
On screw piles, not a slab
No excavation, no concrete, no civil works — the Base is set on reversible screw piles in half a day, two weeks before delivery. If you move, the retreat moves with you, and it keeps a resale value a concrete-based build never can.
A Mobility & Demountability Certificate comes with every building.
Three NOOKs for a retreat. One is the room of your own.
Each module plays a different role, depending on what a retreat means to you.

Questions About Garden Retreats
Is a garden man cave warm enough to use in winter?
Yes. Unlike a cold garden shed or a corner of the garage, the NOOK Base is built to permanent-building specification: 80 mm insulation, an EPDM roof and double false ceiling, double safety-tempered glazing and a full electrical install with dimmable warm LED. Certified Energy A, it stays warm and usable through the winter, not just in summer.
Is a she shed just a fancy shed?
No. A shed is uninsulated, unfinished and cold for most of the year. A NOOK is a proper, finished room — insulated, glazed, warm, powered and secure, with a charcoal heat-treated timber or composite exterior. It is a world away from a shed, and it is designed to be lived in and enjoyed rather than used for storage.
Is there enough power for a TV, console, tools or a fridge?
Yes. Every Base arrives with a full electrical pre-install that comfortably runs a television, a games console, a fridge and hand tools, with dimmable warm LED lighting. For heavier workshop equipment we confirm the specific load with you during the consultation rather than quote a figure here.
Do I need planning permission for a garden retreat?
In many areas a garden building of this size sits within permitted development, and because a NOOK rests on reversible screw piles rather than a concrete slab it is often treated differently from a permanent extension. Rules vary by council, so we provide the full technical documentation and you confirm the position with your local authority. Treat this as guidance, not legal advice.
Is 9.75 m² enough for a retreat?
For a room of one's own, yes. At 9.75 m² the Base holds a reading and craft corner, a bar and games setup, or a hobby bench with room to move. If you want a shared his-and-hers retreat or space for a bar with a loo, the 19.5 m² Doble steps it up.
