The NOOK Base · Family
A garden playroom that grows up with them
The mess, the noise, the friends — close, but out of the house. A warm 9.75 m² room that grows up with them.
A garden playroom that grows up with them, installed in a day.
The room that grows up with them
Why it earns its place
Out of the house, close to home
The mess, the noise and the friends, a few steps across the lawn — without ever leaving your line of sight.
The case for it
The toys and the friends across the lawn — close, but out of the living room
The living room ends up colonised by toys, and teenagers and their friends have nowhere that isn't the family space. A garden playroom moves all of it a few steps across the lawn — the mess, the noise and the friends out of the house, but still in sight from the kitchen window and warm enough to use all year.
The room that grows up
One room, every age
This is the answer to "is it worth it for a playroom?" — it does not stay one. Scroll through the room's whole life.

Inside and out, built for children
Inside · a warm room
A bright, well-lit interior with dimmable warm LED and double safety-tempered glazing that keep the room warm and bright the year round.
Outside · in sight
In charcoal and in view of the house, with the glazing facing back — the mess out of the living room, and the children never out of your line of sight.
Is it worth it?
Cheaper than the extension it replaces
A playroom is a five-year purchase. A NOOK is a twenty-year one — it just keeps changing jobs.
| Criteria | A NOOK Base | A loft or extension | Doing nothing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to ready | 8–12 weeks, a day's install | Months of building | The living room stays colonised |
| Disruption | A day in the garden | Living on a building site | None, and no gain |
| If needs change | Relocatable, resells | Permanent | Grows with them either way |
| Use over time | Playroom to studio | Fixed use | Nothing changes |
Building figures are typical ranges — see your own quotes. NOOK pricing lives in the configurator.
Reversible, not permanent
On screw piles, not a slab
No excavation, no concrete, no civil works — installed in half a day, two weeks before delivery. As the children grow and the room changes jobs, the building can be relocated or removed with no lasting mark on the garden.
A Mobility & Demountability Certificate comes with every building.
Two NOOKs for the family. One is the playroom.
Each module plays a different role as the children grow.

Questions About Garden Playrooms
Is a garden playroom safe and warm for young children?
Yes. The NOOK Base is built to permanent-building specification: 80 mm insulation, double safety-tempered glazing, a level, step-free threshold and cross-ventilation, certified Energy A. It stays warm through the winter and cool in summer, with no step to trip on and toughened glass on both faces — a proper, comfortable room for children rather than a cold, uninsulated outbuilding.
Can I keep an eye on the playroom from the house?
The Base is sited to your garden, so it can be placed in clear view of the house with the glazing facing back toward it, keeping children in sight while the toys and noise stay out of the living room. It is a lockable, glazed room, so it can be closed up securely when it is not in use.
Is a garden room worth it just for a playroom?
It does not stay a playroom. Because the Base is a permanent, insulated, relocatable room, it grows up with the family — a playroom now, a teen den in a few years, then a study, a studio, an office or a guest room. It earns its place across the whole arc of family life rather than for a couple of childhood years, and it keeps a resale value a fixed extension never can.
Do I need planning permission for a garden playroom?
In many areas a garden building of this size sits within permitted development, and because a NOOK rests on reversible screw piles rather than a concrete slab it is often treated differently from a permanent extension. Rules vary by council, so we provide the full technical documentation and you confirm the position with your local authority. Treat this as guidance, not legal advice.
Is 9.75 m² enough for a playroom or teen den?
Yes. At 9.75 m² the Base holds a soft-floor play zone with toy storage, or a teen den with a sofa, a console and a desk, with room to move. If you want a playroom plus a separate guest or study zone, the 19.5 m² Doble steps it up.
